The production, directed by Małgorzata Bogajewska and based on a translation by Szymon Wróblewski, opened at the Polish theatre on Wednesday night.
Majok, who was born in 1985 in Bytom near Katowice, came to Poland for the first night performance.
Majok moved to the United States with her family when she was five. Her plays, which include Ironbound and John, Who’s Here from Cambridge, have been staged in New York, Washington and Chicago.
Cost of Living, which won Majok the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, explores interactions among able-bodied and disabled individuals. It focuses on the lives of four people: Eddie, an unemployed truck driver; Ani, his ex-wife who is left paralysed after a tragic accident; John, who has cerebral palsy; and Jess, his new caregiver.
The drama was hailed by the Pulitzer Prize jury as “an honest, original work that invites audiences to examine diverse perceptions of privilege and human connection through two pairs of mismatched individuals.”
The production of Majok’s Cost of Living at the Ślaski Theatre is one of the highlights of the Open the Door international festival, which has attracted companies from Scotland, the Czech Republic and Spain.
