The Polish production is competing with nine other films from countries such as France, Hungary, South Korea, Spain and the Czech Republic.

Corpus Christi tells the story of twenty-year-old Daniel, who after leaving juvenile detention pretends to be a priest.

Komasa's film scooped 10 awards at the 44th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

The selection of a final five nominees for the Academy Awards in the best international film category will be announced on January 13, 2020, in Hollywood.

The shortlist includes South Korean black comedy Parasite; Pain and Glory by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar; and Czech film Painted Bird, based on a book by Polish writer Jerzy Kosiński.

Next year's Oscar ceremony will no longer include the best foreign-language feature category. It has morphed into best international film competition.

The Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 9 in Hollywood.
