Poles invited to join Oscar awards body

The US-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Oscars, has extended membership invitations to four new Polish filmmakers in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the cinema industry.

The latest Polish invitees are director Jan Komasa, whose credits include Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi and Warsaw ’44; scriptwriter Przemysław Chruścielewski (Corpus Christi, The Last Family); film editor Mateusz Pacewicz (Corpus Christi, Suicide Room: Hater); and casting director Magdalena Szwarcbart (two Oscar-winning movies: Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cold War and Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List).

A total of 819 filmmakers from 68 countries are among those newly invited to join the Oscar-voting body.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927 with a membership of about 300. It currently affiliates more than 9,000 artists and executives representing a wide range of movie industry professions.
