The Pole is among the final five nominees in the Cinematography category, as announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday.
He is in the running for an Academy Award against Joshua James Richards (Nomadland), Erik Messerschmidt (Mank), Phedon Papamichael (The Trial of the Chicago 7), and Sean Bobbitt (Judas and the Black Messiah).
News of the World tells the story of an American Civil War veteran who embarks on a risky journey to bring an orphaned girl to a new home.
Wolski, 64, was born in Warsaw on May 7, 1956. He graduated from the Film School in Łódź, central Poland. He moved to the United States in 1979 at the age of 23.
His credits include The Pirates of the Caribbean film series and music videos with artists such as Elton John, David Bowie, Sting and Neil Young.
The Oscar nominations list also includes Quo Vadis, Aida? in the Best International Feature Film category. The movie is an official entry from Bosnia and Herzegovina, but Poland was among the film's nine co-producers. Poles were also responsible for the editing (Jarosław Kamiński), costumes (Małgorzata Karpiuk) and music soundtrack (Antoni Komasa-Łazarkiewicz).
The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place in Hollywood on April 25.
