Almost 160 pianists from across the world this month took part in a 12-day qualifying stage in which they were evaluated by an international panel of judges.
Seventy-eight contestants emerged victorious from that preliminary round.
Meanwhile, nine pianists with prizes from other major international piano competitions have been selected without having to go through the preliminaries.
