Polish lawmakers earlier this month voted 444 to 1, with no abstentions, to declare 2022 the Year of Maria Konopnicka, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.

The resolution passed by the lower house of Poland’s parliament honours Konopnicka as an "one of the greatest writers in the history of Polish literature."

It notes that Konopnicka in 1908 published a patriotic poem entitled "Rota" in protest against the policies of "Germanization" at a time when Poland was controlled by foreign partitioning powers.

Konopnicka's poem "has played a significant role in the history of the Polish people," the resolution also said.

May 23, 2022 will mark the 180th anniversary of Konopnicka's birth.

Maria Konopnicka, née Wasiłowska, was born on May 23, 1842 in Suwałki in what is now northeastern Poland.

She died on October 8, 1910 in Lviv in present-day Ukraine.
