Polish missionary dies in Puerto Rico

Father Stanisław Szczepanik, a Polish missionary, has died in the town of Ponce on the southern coast of Puerto Rico.

On Friday, he was found unconscious on a pavement with a head injury, his bike lying close to him.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died on Sunday, aged 63. He was on his way to celebrate a morning mass.

Father Szczepanik was a member of the Congregation of the Mission, which he joined in 1981.

He started working as a missionary in 1986 in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He later moved to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and finally, to Puerto Rico, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Caribbean Sea.
