It said a total of PLN 200 million (EUR 44 million, USD 47 million) is now available from the government-run National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) to scientists and businesses working to develop promising new methods to diagnose, treat and prevent COVID-19 and other viral diseases.

The funds, offered as part of the European Union’s Smart Growth Operational Programme, will subsidize efforts such as work to develop diagnostic devices to quickly detect the presence of the coronavirus, the PAP news agency reported.

Subsidies will also be granted to help finance research into new drugs and vaccines as well as methods to limit the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, Poland’s National Science Centre (NCN) announced it was offering a total of PLN 10 million (EUR 2.2 million, USD 2.4 million) in special grants amid worldwide efforts to contain the viral outbreak.
