The new plant in the town of Police, about 500 kilometres from the capital Warsaw, will mark the largest project in the Polish chemical industry in years, according to Wojciech Wardacki, CEO of Grupa Azoty, Poland's biggest chemical group.

He added that the massive facility, with a production capacity of almost half a million tonnes of polypropylene a year, would enable Poland to become an exporter, rather than importer, of polypropylene.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Monday that the project would create 400 jobs in the area and three times as many indirectly linked to the new factory.

The new plant is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022, using financing from South Korean companies including Hyundai Engineering, state news agency PAP reported.

Polypropylene is a plastic that is used to make a myriad of consumer and industrial products, including auto parts.

Poland's Duda said at the weekend that large infrastructure and industrial projects were a driver of economic growth in the time of the coronavirus crisis.

The Polish president and prime minister last week urged stepped-up investment in Europe to stimulate economies and help them recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
