The European Commission said on Tuesday it had approved a PLN 142 million (around EUR 32 million) “Polish aid scheme to compensate airports for the damage suffered due to the coronavirus outbreak.”

It explained that Poland banned all international and domestic air passenger services at its airports on March 15 in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The flight restrictions were progressively lifted beginning June 1, the European Commission said, but certain travel warnings, bans and restrictive measures remained in place until the end of June.

“This resulted in high operating losses for the operators of Polish airports,” the EU executive added.

Under the plan approved by the Commission, Poland’s authorities will be able to compensate airports for any revenue losses suffered during that period, according to the ec.europa.eu website.
