At the same time, the number of housing starts throughout 2020 was 5.7 percent lower than a year earlier, the office said in a preliminary estimate.

Meanwhile, overall output in Poland’s construction-and-assembly sector increased by 3.4 percent in December in year-on-year terms, while growing by 34.4 percent month on month, the state-run statistics agency reported.

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a policy speech in November 2019 that his government would step up efforts to spur housing construction, mentioning a target of at least 200,000 new homes a year.

According to a study that year, Poland was building the largest number of new dwellings in Central Europe, but not enough to meet demand.

There is still a shortage of around 2 million housing units in Poland, according to some real estate experts.
