The Pengab index, which measures banking sentiment in the country, went up by 10.5 points to 2.1 in January, emerging from negative territory for the first time in months, the Polish Bank Association (ZBP) and market researcher Kantar TNS have said in a joint report.

The improvement in the index reflected an increase in customer activity on the Polish market for banking services after a steep slide last year, according to the report.

Krzysztof Pietraszkiewicz, the head of the Polish Bank Association, was quoted as saying that even though the latest reading of the Pengab index was markedly better than in previous months, it was still nearly 20 points lower on average than before the pandemic.

The study was carried out from January 11 to 22, surveying 101 bank outlets nationwide, state news agency PAP reported.

Last year, banking sentiment in Poland tumbled to its lowest level on record amid the coronavirus pandemic.
