Zbigniew Rau urged dialogue through the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which Poland is chairing in 2022.

"As Chairman of thOSCE, I closely follow recent developments in Kazakhstan," Rau tweeted in English on Wednesday.

"Violence is never a right response to resolve the current challenges," he added.

He called for "de-escalation of the situation and starting a dialogue with full respect of OSCE commitments."

The president of ex-Soviet republic Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, appealed to a Russian-led security bloc for help on Wednesday after failing to quell days of protests that have seen state buildings torched and eight security personnel reported dead, the Reuters news agency reported.

In a newspaper article published on Wednesday, Poland's Rau pledged to promote dialogue and goodwill as his country takes over at the helm of the OSCE in 2022 amid increased tensions between the West and Russia.

Poland took over the rotating presidency of the OSCE from Sweden on January 1, with Rau taking a role as the organization’s Chairperson-in-Office.

This is the second time Poland is chairing the organization, with its previous turn at the helm in 1998.

Poland's Rau said last year that ensuring a peaceful resolution to a protracted conflict between Russia and Ukraine would be one of the priorities of Poland’s presidency of the OSCE in 2022.

Rau told a meeting of the Permanent Council of the OSCE in Vienna in July that Poland's efforts would focus on strengthening security, but also on improving the situation of societies affected by conflicts.
