Volodymyr Skovorodka hopes to cover the 800-kilometre distance in two weeks, arriving in the Polish capital on August 24, to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Dubbed “The Gratitude Ultramarathon,” the run is intended as a sign of solidarity with the Polish Fire Service and a thank-you gesture for the help provided to Ukrainian emergency agencies amid the war, organisers said.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Zvarych, took to social media to support the initiative, tweeting: “We are waiting for Mr. Volodymyr Skovorodka in Warsaw. We wish you an easy run and see you soon!”

Ukrainians can donate to the cause through a special website.

They are also encouraged to post “thank-you notes and kind words for the Polish people” as a mark of gratitude for Poland’s support to Ukraine amid the Russian aggression, the PAP news agency reported.

Friday is day 170 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
