Exam time for Polish high school seniors

High school seniors around Poland started a round of graduation exams on Tuesday.

The tests began at 9 a.m. with an exam in Polish, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

On Wednesday, high school seniors will have their knowledge of mathematics assessed, followed by an evaluation of their foreign-language skills on Thursday.

Students must take exams in three compulsory subjects. Most have opted to also take additional subjects, which are required for admission to universities, according to officials.

The matura exams are a rite of passage in Poland and determine young people's futures to a large extent.

They will be taken this month by more than 263,000 secondary school students nationwide, state news agency PAP reported.
