Women registered about 102,800 one-person businesses last year, accounting for 39% of all newly established sole proprietorships, based on data from the Central Registration and Information on Business (CEIDG).

Most of those businesses were started by Polish citizens. Polish women accounted for 87% of the female-founded firms, while foreign women made up 13%.

About six in ten businesses launched by Polish women were concentrated in professional, scientific, and technical activities, trade, healthcare, and social assistance, and other service activities, the institute said.

Around 61% of businesses registered by foreign women operated in four areas: other service activities, trade, administrative and support services, and professional, scientific and technical activities.

By contrast, 16% of sole proprietorships founded by Polish women operated in healthcare and social assistance, compared with 5% among foreign women.

March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a global occasion that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world.
