Waldemar Kraska said: “We have received signals that Poles are heading off en masse to relax in mountain regions.”

He added: “I urgently and sincerely appeal to all Poles: while in such areas, observe the rules in force very rigorously.”

Ski slopes, as well as swimming pools and outdoor pitches in Poland, were allowed to reopen on Friday amid signs of a let-up in the spread of the coronavirus.

Hotels and B&Bs, meanwhile, have been permitted to make half their number of rooms available to guests. Hotel restaurants must remain closed.

The loosening of COVID-19 curbs will last for two weeks, after which it will be reassessed.

Restrictions may return

Health Ministry spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz warned: “If people act irresponsibly, the restrictions will return.”

Cinemas, theatres and opera houses have also been permitted to open, though at half capacity. Audiences must keep their mouth and nose covered.

Restaurants, gyms and aqua parks have to remain closed to the general public.

Shopping malls, museums and art galleries across the country were allowed to reopen on February 1.

Poland on Friday reported 6,379 new coronavirus infections and 247 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases during the pandemic to 1,577,036 and fatalities to 40,424.
