Poland’s population shrinks to 37.6 million in 2023: stats office

Poland’s population decreased to 37.6 million last year, marking a decline of nearly 130,000 from 2022, according to an updated estimate from the country's statistics office.

The nation experienced its lowest number of births since World War II, with just over 272,000 live births recorded nationwide—down by nearly 33,000 compared with 2022, the Statistics Poland agency reported on Monday.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths declined to around 409,000, a decrease of 39,000 compared with the previous year, it said.

Women make up almost 52 percent of the country's population, with 107 women for every 100 men, according to Statistics Poland.

The average Pole was nearly 43 years old last year, the statistics office.

Around 146,000 marriages were registered across the country in 2023, a decrease of almost 10,000 compared with 2022.

Meanwhile, almost 57,000 married couples divorced last year, roughly 3,000 fewer than in 2022, and a further 600 couples separated, Statistics Poland reported.
