Poland scrambles aircraft as Russia launches missile strikes on Ukraine

Poland scrambled aircraft and put its air defence systems on alert as Russia launched a new massive missile attack on neighbouring Ukraine overnight into Friday, military officials said.

The Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces said in a statement that "all necessary procedures have been initiated to ensure the safety of Polish airspace."

It added that it was "monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis."

The statement also said that Polish and allied aircraft were activated early on Friday, cautioning the public of "increased noise levels, particularly in the southeast of the country," in areas across the border from Ukraine.

The alert was in effect for about three hours, news outlets reported.

Russia launched a fresh wave of missile strikes on central and western Ukraine in the early hours of Friday morning, targeting the country's power infrastructureaccording to officials.

"During the night, the Russians struck again at energy facilities in a massive and combined attack," Ukrainian power grid operator Ukrenergo said on the Telegram messaging app.

"Thermal and hydroelectric power plants in the central and western regions were damaged," it added, as cited by the Reuters news agency.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Friday is day 765 of Russias war on Ukraine.
