Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as a deputy prime minister, highlighted Sikorski’s "wealth of international experience and expertise," saying that the Polish foreign minister would be best suited for such a position because he “possesses all the necessary qualifications.”

The endorsement comes amid growing calls for heightened EU security measures during Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The European Union has so far lacked a commissioner responsible for defense and security. However, due to the war in Ukraine, many say such a role is becoming increasingly needed.

According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, Sikorski has built a "huge international reputation" and has "extensive knowledge in the field of international affairs and security.”

Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that Sikorski is serving his second stint as foreign minister and has previously worked as defense minister.

In addition, Sikorski has substantial experience in “European structures,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz, who leads the rural-based Polish People’s Party (PSL), one of the groups in the coalition government in Warsaw.

According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, having a Pole fill the proposed new EU role would be in the country’s national interests, reflecting its position as the largest EU member neighboring Ukraine and its direct impact from the ongoing war.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said the European Union should allocate a specific budget to establish the new position of commissioner in charge of defense and security.

Poland’s development minister to seek EU Parliament seat

Speaking to the media last week, Kosiniak-Kamysz also confirmed reports that Poland’s Development and Technology Minister Krzysztof Hetman, a politician with the Polish People’s Party, would stand in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

At least three other Polish government ministers will also run in the EU elections, according to announcements.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk last Wednesday urged Poles to vote in the upcoming ballot, calling it one of the most important in Europe in decades.

On June 9, Polish voters will decide on the election of 53 members of the European Parliament from Poland.

Kosiniak-Kamysz voiced concern about voter turnout in the ballot, arguing that low participation could disadvantage smaller parties. He also advocated for the potential inclusion of online voting in future EU elections, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
