The two-way talks, officially referred to as intergovernmental consultations, were being led by Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukraine's Denys Shmyhal, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Major topics included defence, agriculture and trade, in addition to Ukraine's bid to join the European Union, according to officials.

Welcoming his Ukrainian counterpart to Warsaw, Tusk said in a post on the X social media platform that "there will be no secure Europe without a free Ukraine."

Ukraine's Shmyhal said in an X post that the two governments "will discuss arms for Ukraine, the situation on our countries' borders, trade development and infrastructure."

He added that he was counting on "a pragmatic and constructive dialogue and the development of effective solutions."

Announcing the talks last month, the Polish prime minister voiced hope that "discussions among ministers and deputy ministers will prove highly beneficial in addressing border issues and enhancing our bilateral trade."

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Thursday is day 764 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
