The Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces said in a statement that "all necessary procedures have been initiated" to ensure the safety of Polish airspace.
It added that it was "monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis."
The statement also said that Polish and allied aircraft were activated early on Thursday, with the Operational Command taking steps to ensure safety in areas near the Ukrainian border.
The alert was in effect until around 8 a.m., when the Operational Command noted a decreased threat of Russian strikes on Ukrainian regions bordering Poland.
The Operational Command reported no violations of Polish airspace during the Russian air strikes on Ukraine.
“We thank NATO Air Command and the Swedish air force for their support," the Operational Command said, adding that Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets helped ensure the safety of Polish airspace.
At least eight dead, dozens wounded in Kyiv: Zelensky
Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine overnight into Thursday, targeting various regions across the country, including the capital Kyiv, according to officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a video showing the aftermath of a Russian strike on Kyiv. "Another massive attack against our cities and communities," he wrote on X. "Killings again. Tragically, at least eight people have already been confirmed dead. One of them is a child."
'Russia chooses ballistics instead of negotiating table'
Zelensky added: "Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table. It chooses to continue killing instead of ending the war. And this means that Russia still does not fear the consequences. Russia still takes advantage of the fact that at least part of the world turns a blind eye to murdered children and seeks excuses for Putin."
Building of EU's Kyiv delegation damaged: official
EU Commissioner Marta Kos said that Russia's overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv damaged the EU delegation's building in the city.
"The EU Delegation in Kyiv was damaged by today's Russian strikes on civilian areas," Kos said in a post on X.
"I strongly condemn these brutal attacks, a clear sign that Russia rejects peace and chooses terror, " she added. " Our full solidarity goes to EU staff, their families, and all Ukrainians enduring this aggression."
Ukraine's air force said Russia used nearly 600 drones and more than 30 missiles in the overnight attack on the country.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Thursday is day 1,281 of the war.
