Last month, a truck carrying 10 tigers in total from Italy to a zoo in Russia was stranded on the Polish-Belarusian border after the driver was found to be lacking proper travel documents.
One of the animals died after Belarusian authorities did not let the truck enter their country, citing missing paperwork, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.
Out of the nine surviving animals, two were taken to a zoo in northern Poland, and seven were given temporary refuge by a zoo in Poznań, western Poland.
The Poznań zoo said that five tigers might on Sunday be sent to an animal shelter in Spain, with the remaining four staying in Poland.
Małgorzata Chodyła, a spokeswoman for the Poznań zoo, told state news agency PAP that the exact date the tigers would be transported depended on a decision by Dutch animal welfare organisation Animal Advocates, which is responsible for the venture.
