Polish PM in close touch with EU leaders amid protests in Belarus: spokesman

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is keeping in close touch with other European leaders as they monitor the situation in Belarus, the government spokesman has said, amid growing post-election tensions in Poland's eastern neighbour.

On Sunday, Morawiecki discussed the situation in Belarus with leaders including European Council head Charles Michel, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the spokesman, Piotr Müller, said on Twitter.

Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Minsk and other cities in Belarus in recent days to contest the widely-disputed re-election victory of the country’s strongman president, Alexander Lukashenko.

Belarusian opposition politician Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said on Monday she was ready to lead the nation and called for the establishment of a legal framework to hold a new fair presidential election, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

Russia said on Sunday it had told Lukashenko it was ready to offer military assistance if necessary as demonstrators held the biggest protest yet against what they call Lukashenko's rigged re-election, the Reuters news agency reported.
