The rallies took place on the 102nd anniversary of Polish women obtaining the right to vote.

Police detained at least 10 people in Warsaw, where a protest spilled out onto Łazienkowska street, a major traffic artery running through the capital.

Police described the incident as “very dangerous.”

“A group of protesters ran onto the road, despite heavy traffic,” said Warsaw police spokesman Sylwester Marczak.

Demonstrations also took place in the south-western city of Wrocław, in the central city of Łódź, in Gdańsk in the north, Kraków in the south and Lublin in the east.

In defiance of a ban on mass gatherings amid a COVID-19 epidemic, tens of thousands of women, liberals and anti-government demonstrators have been taking to the streets around the country since October 22.

The protests were sparked by a ruling from the Constitutional Tribunal which heralded a near-total ban on abortion in Poland.

President Andrzej Duda subsequently submitted a bill that would mean less severe rules than those signalled by the tribunal’s decision.
