During the bilateral talks, the two top diplomats will discuss "strengthening the strategic partnership" between Poland and Sweden, with a "special focus on security and the international situation," the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Polish-Swedish political consultations will focus on issues including "Sweden joining NATO, cooperation between the Baltic states, support for Ukraine, further sanctions against Russia and Belarus, and EU enlargement," according to the statement.

Rau and Billström will also talk about ways of boosting economic cooperation between Poland and Sweden, the Polish foreign ministry said.

In a major speech to parliament earlier this spring, Rau said that Poland was making “every effort to convince our allies - Turkey and Hungary - who have yet to ratify agreements on Sweden’s accession to NATO to do so without undue delay.”

Sweden asked to join NATO in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February last year, but its bid for membership has been stalled due to objections from Ankara and Budapest, Polish state news agency PAP has reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.

Sunday is day 473 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
