Poland risks wartime fuel shortfall — report

01.09.2025 11:50
Poland could face a military fuel shortage in a conflict because, 26 years after joining NATO, it still is not covered by the CEPS military pipeline network, Polish daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reported on Monday.

The newspaper said Poland’s current system for supplying fuel to the armed forces would quickly prove inadequate.

Citing the Ośrodek Studiów Wschodnich (OSW), it wrote that “supplying the entire Central European theater solely with rail and road tankers could quickly lead to a shortage,” also reducing the capacity of roads and rail lines.

Talks on bringing Poland into the pipeline system have been under way since 2014, DGP said.

A feasibility study has been prepared, and the investment for Eastern Europe was estimated at EUR 21 billion, but funding remains unclear.

According to the report, Poland and other countries in the region want to draw on NATO’s common budget and use European Union funds. Southern European states, however, do not agree to that approach.
