Poland temporarily closed airspace over parts of the country on Wednesday, halting flights at Warsaw Chopin even as the airport remained open, after drone incursions during overnight strikes on Ukraine, authorities said.

Warsaw Chopin Airport said airspace above parts of Poland, including over the capital’s hub, was “temporarily closed” due to actions by state services and the military to ensure safety.

“The airport remains open, but flight operations are currently not taking place,” it said, urging passengers to monitor official government and airline notices.

Poland’s Operational Command said drone-type objects repeatedly violated Polish airspace during overnight Russian attacks on targets in Ukraine. The commander activated “all necessary procedures,” with Polish and allied aircraft operating in national airspace and ground-based air defense and radar systems raised to the highest readiness.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said four Polish airports — Warsaw Chopin, Warsaw-Modlin, Rzeszów-Jasionka and Lublin — were closed overnight due to “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.”

Passengers were advised to follow updates from authorities and carriers as the situation develops.
