Controversy after US envoy cuts ties with Poland's top lawmaker

Three months after assuming his post, US Ambassador to Poland Thomas Rose sparked controversy by announcing he would cut off contact with the Speaker of Poland’s parliament—a move that revived questions about his unconventional diplomatic background.

Rose, a political appointee rather than a career diplomat, took office in Warsaw on November 6, nine months after President Donald Trump announced his nomination, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

His appointment was reportedly secured through support from billionaire GOP donor Miriam Adelson, rather than deep personal ties to Trump or significant campaign contributions.

The ambassador’s decision on Thursday to sever ties with Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty followed Czarzasty’s refusal to support nominating the US president for the Nobel Peace Prize—citing concerns over the president’s alleged destabilization of international institutions and violations of international law.

The incident drew attention to Rose’s past as a journalist and political commentator, as well as his close affiliation with the Republican Party’s right-wing and staunchly pro-Israel circles.

A self-described Zionist Jew and MAGA supporter, Rose previously worked as a senior adviser to Vice President Mike Pence and was publisher of the Jerusalem Post.

Despite his sharp views, Rose told the US Senate during his confirmation hearing that he would avoid favoring any political faction in Poland and praised the country as “the best ally America could dream of.”

He also pledged to improve Polish-Israeli relations and defend US interests vigorously.

Former US Ambassador Daniel Fried warned in 2023 that political neutrality would be key to Rose’s success.

“If he’s as smart as he looks, he won’t take sides in Polish politics,” Fried said at the time.

Rose’s nomination passed the US Senate with a narrow party-line vote of 51–47, unlike his predecessors, who were approved by unanimous consent.
