The incident occurred early Tuesday morning around 3:30 a.m. at a depth of 870 meters, generating a force equivalent to a 2.66 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale.
Rajmund Horst, Vice President of the Polish Mining Group, confirmed the fatalities, stating that despite successful efforts to reach and transport three workers to the surface, two were pronounced dead. The third rescued miner was conscious and has been hospitalized in Sosnowiec.
The tremor affected a section of the mine where fifteen miners were present; eleven managed to escape on their own. Rescue efforts involved six teams from various rescue organizations, utilizing breathing apparatus due to the compromised air quality and restoring ventilation to the affected zone.
This latest tragedy adds to the tally of fatal mining incidents in Poland for 2024, with previous occurrences at the Bobrek and Borynia-Zofiówka-Bzie mines, which claimed one life and left eight injured.
