During a debate in the European Parliament on Tuesday, lawmakers called for the creation of legal procedures to support Ukrainian refugees in the EU in the long term.

“Current assistance, provided mainly by citizens in a humane gesture, has to be ultimately supplanted by dedicated financial and logistic support, channelled through the institutions of the EU and member states,” Polish MEP Marek Belka, a former prime minister, said.

Poland on Wednesday reported it had admitted 1,330,000 people fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
