Mariusz Błaszczak and Lloyd Austin both emphasised it was important that NATO allies provide significant and urgent support for Ukraine, the Polish defence ministry said in a statement.

The US secretary of defence thanked Poland for its “huge effort and dedication” in this regard, the statement added, as quoted by the state PAP news agency.

Błaszczak in turn thanked Austin for Washington’s recent decision to deploy two batteries of the Patriot air-defence system to Poland.

The Polish defence minister said the move would strengthen Poland’s air defences, representing a significant boost to the security of the country and allies throughout the region, according to the ministry statement.

Thursday is day fifteen of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24.
