Duda hosted Pelosi at the presidential palace in Warsaw, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Pelosi was accompanied by a Congressional delegation that included Representative Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Barbara Lee of California and Jason Crow of Colorado, according to officials.

“We are happy with this visit, which comes just after your return from Kyiv,” the Polish president told his guests.

“It’s enormously important for the relations in our part of Europe,” he added.

Duda met with the US delegation alongside officials including his foreign policy aide Jakub Kumoch and Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz.

The talks focused on “supporting Ukraine and its refugees amid the Russian invasion; bolstering NATO’s eastern flank; and deepening transatlantic ties, including in energy security,” reporters were told.

The US lawmakers thanked Poland and its people for the generosity shown to Ukrainian refugees, Polish officials said.

'Valued partner in supporting people of Ukraine’

Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, referred to Duda as “a valued partner in supporting the people of Ukraine in the face of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s brutal and unprovoked war.”

She added in a statement that her delegation had “expressed America’s deep gratitude to the Polish government and Polish people for opening their hearts and homes to Ukrainian refugees.”

“We reaffirmed our nation’s pledge to continue supporting Poland’s humanitarian efforts,” the top lawmaker also said.

Pelosi said other topics included “our countries’ continued commitment to Ukraine” and “to further strengthening the U.S.-Polish partnership and the NATO alliance.”

“Further informed and deeply moved by our experiences throughout our engagements in Poland, our delegation will return to Washington ready to continue our work until victory is won, and Ukraine has defended Democracy for their nation and the world,” Pelosi concluded.

Pelosi calls for EU freeze on Russian assets

Earlier, Pelosi told Polish media that the US House of Representatives last week approve new rules to freeze Russian assets and use them in the reconstruction of Ukraine, the PAP news agency reported.

Asked if the European Union should adopt similar measures, she replied: "Yes, definitely," according to PAP.

Top Polish, US lawmakers meet

While in Warsaw on Monday, Pelosi also met with Elżbieta Witek, the leader of Poland's lower house, the Sejm.

Witek said afterwards that Pelosi had welcomed her initiative to bring together female leaders of the European Parliament, as well as meet the parliamentary speakers from the Bucharest Nine group, to explore new ways of helping Ukrainians, both in Poland and elsewhere.

"We agreed that every format of this kind is a good opportunity to keep searching for new solutions," Witek told reporters, as cited by PAP.

Pelosi and her delegation arrived in Poland on Sunday, straight from Kyiv where Pelosi had met with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The US lawmakers visited Poland’s southeastern city of Rzeszów near the Ukrainian border before heading to Warsaw for Monday’s meeting with the Polish president and top officials.

Monday was day 68 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Poland on Monday reported it had welcomed nearly 3.1 million refugees fleeing Russia’s war on Ukraine.
