The assault took place in the early hours of Saturday, Polish state news agency PAP reported, citing the hamburg24.de website.
Stones, paint, burning tyres
Poland’s diplomatic mission in Hamburg’s Steilshoop district was attacked with stones and splashed with red, white and blue paint, according to hamburg24.de, as cited by PAP.
Moreover, a number of tyres were set alight near the consulate. As a result, the fire service was called to the scene at around 2.25am on Saturday.
The street was also strewn with paving stones, smoke pots and empty paint cans, hamburg24.de reported, according to PAP.
Hamburg police arrived soon afterwards and cordoned off the consulate, beginning a search for the perpetrators.
“Three people were detained near the consulate, but were later released due to a lack of sufficient evidence,” hamburg24.de reported, as quoted by PAP.
Russian colours
The website noted that the paint used in the attack was red, white and blue, Russia’s national colours, the PAP news agency reported.
Two weeks ago, the Polish embassy in Moscow was splattered with red paint, in apparent retaliation for an earlier incident, when the Russian ambassador to Warsaw was doused in red liquid by Ukraine supporters.
