Among the reasons for the move, Rau cited swathes of Polish tourists coming to the island and the increasing number of  Polish residents there, the PAP news agency reported on Friday.

Rau said that 140,000 Polish tourists annually visit Malta which has a population of only 500,000, with 2,000 Polish nationals living permanently on the island.

Rau attended the opening ceremony in Santa Venera and met with ambassador Tomasz Czyszka, who has been on the island for three years, but until now, he formally could not take up his post.

The launch comes after the decision to open it was made in 2019 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The embassy will consist of an ambassador, a consul, and a cultural attaché.

Rau added that there were also plans to establish a Polish school in Malta.
