16,000 foreigners volunteer to fight for Ukraine: report

Some 16,000 foreigners have volunteered to fight for Ukraine against Russian invasion forces, the Ukrainian army has said, according to a Polish news website.

The tvp.info website quoted Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces as saying on Thursday that around 16,000 military volunteers from various countries were on their way to Ukraine to help it in the fight against Russia.

The report came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week announced the creation of an "international legion" made up of volunteer fighters, according to tvp.info.

The legion is expected to operate as part of Ukraine's territorial defence force, the Polish website reported.
