The news was unveiled by the Ukrinform news agency, the Polish polsatnews.pl website reported on Tuesday.
According to Ukrinform, Maj Gen Vitaly Gerasimov, the chief of staff of Russia’s 41st army, was killed on the outskirts of Kharkiv along with several other high-ranking officers of the invading forces.
Ukrinform’s reports have since been confirmed by Ukraine’s defence-intelligence agency.
Gerasimov was a veteran of the second Chechen war and the war in Syria, as well as taking part in the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, the nexta.tv website reported.
According to Ukraine’s InformNapalm website, Gerasimov also provided support to the self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk “people’s republics” in eastern Ukraine.
Tuesday marks day thirteen of Russia’s assault on Ukraine, which began on February 24.
