According to Peter Ekstedt, spokesperson for the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS), the cable was cut in two places.
The cable's owner, Global Connect, announced on its website that a serious outage had occurred. As a result of the incident, approximately 6,000 households and 100 business customers in Finland were without internet access on Monday. "Repairs are ongoing," the company stated.
Sweden's Minister of Civil Defense, Carl-Oscar Bohlin, emphasized that the situation is being taken seriously. "Due to the circumstances, Finnish police suspect sabotage," he said.
In mid-November, two telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea connecting Lithuania with Sweden and Finland with Germany were also severed. An investigation into possible sabotage is being conducted by Swedish prosecutors, among others. The Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 is suspected of damaging the cables.
