There were around 866,100 people without jobs across the nation at the end of February, down by 55,700 from a year earlier, according to the government.

The state-run Statistics Poland agency (GUS) reported last month that the Polish jobless rate had risen to 5.5 percent in January, from 5.2 percent in December.

Meanwhile, the European Unions Eurostat statistics agency, which uses a different methodology, estimated at the start of this month that unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.8 percent in January, down from 2.9 percent in December and the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation bloc.
