The reading was a notch lower than an earlieestimate of 5.3 percent for April issued by the government.

There were around 821,900 people without jobs across the nation at the end of April, compared with 846,900 a month earlier, according to the state-run Statistics Poland (GUS) office.

The state-run statistics agency reported earlier this month that employment in Polish companies rose 0.4 percent in April on average in year-on-year terms.

According to the European Union’s Eurostat statistics agency, which uses a different methodology, unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.8 percent in March, unchanged from February and one of the lowest rates in the 27-nation bloc.
