The funds are intended to support green reforms and projects contributing to "a more resilient energy system," officials said.
Friday's decision by EU finance ministers follows a positive assessment of proposed Polish projects by the European Commission last month, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
The EUR 5 billion pre-financing is part of the bloc’s REPowerEU program aimed at helping the 27 EU nations recover from the energy crisis that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, and reduce their dependence on Russian fossil fuels, the AP news agency reported.
The money will be used to develop energy networks in rural areas and create new energy storage and transmission facilities, among other projects, private broadcaster TVN24 said.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II.
Friday is day 653 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
