The Polish-French-Italian consortium signed the contract for the project in Latvia on Thursday, Poland's forsal.pl website reported.

Budimex will lay the tracks for the rapid-rail route and build its civil engineering facilities, incliding 175 enginnering structures and 11 animal crossings, officials said.

Work on the 230-kilometre high-speed rail link will start in 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2032, according to Budimex.

The project is worth EUR 3.7 billion and is co-financed by the European Union and Latvia, forsal.pl reported.

It will be the Latvian section of Rail Baltica, a rapid-rail link between Tallinn, Estonia and Warsaw, Poland, designed to integrate the Baltic states into the European rail network, officials said.

Rail Baltica's design speed is 249 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains, Budimex noted.

Thanks to the rapid-rail link, Poles will be able to travel from Warsaw to Vilnius in 4 hours, to Riga in 5 hours and to Tallinn in 6 hours and 45 minutes, forsal.pl reported.
