The mushroom picker, a resident of the village of Strzelinko in Poland’s northern Pomerania province, found the treasure in a landslip on the banks of the River Słupia, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Provincial Office for the Protection of Historical Relics, two of the coins were used in Persia in the 7th century, and many are thought to be of Arabian provenance.
Numerous pieces of ceramics have also been unearthed in the same spot, leading experts to believe the coins were originally placed inside a clay pot.
Efforts are under way to restore the pot to its original shape.
