Amid an escalating outbreak, which saw infections and deaths hit a record on Thursday, Poland has decided to set up a network of temporary facilities to treat COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Artur Zaczyński, who is coordinating work to set up the hospital in the National Stadium, said such temporary facilities will be used "when the health care system becomes fully ineffective".

The head of the Prime Minister’s Office, Michał Dworczyk, said on Thursday that the hospital at the National Stadium would ultimately have 1,200 beds, including 100 intensive care beds.

The National Stadium is a prime venue for sports and entertainment events next to the Vistula river in the Polish capital.

Poland on Thursday reported a record 20,156 new coronavirus infections and a record 301 new deaths, its worst daily toll since the start of the pandemic.
