The website was designed by Poland’s Superskrypt company for the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding with support from the Polish Ministry for Culture,National Heritage and Sport.

The Ministry has said on its website that an award at the prestigious competition is not only a great success for Polish designers but also an opportunity to promote the knowledge about the Katyń crime.

More than 22,000 Polish officers and prisoners of war were murdered by the NKVD Soviet secret police in Katyń forest in Soviet Russia in the spring of 1940.

The “Katyń Pro Memoria” website (www.katynpromemoria.pl) aims at restoring the remembrance of the victims of the massacre using memoirs, letters and artefacts placed in a virtual forest which is a faithful reconstruction of the Katyn forest. It combines a 3D image with sound and audio tracks recorded by leading Polish actors.

The concept of lighting a virtual candle of remembrance is an integral part of the website.

Despite implementing innovative technology, the website is fully available to work on mobile phones as well.
