The booster shot will be administered at least six months after full vaccination and is designed to help people who have been double-jabbed retain their immunity, public health officials said.

Until now booster shots were only available to people aged over 50, those with impaired immunity and healthcare workers.

"It is a very important dose because waning immunity over time means booster jabs are vital for continued protection," Waldemar Kraska, a deputy health minister, told public broadcaster Polish Radio.

Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines based on mRNA technology will be used for booster shots nationwide, Kraska said.
