Safe holidays

In line with tradition, an important topic of the meeting was holiday safety, officials said.

The president handed awards to four youngsters who saved people’s lives and property by calling emergency services in a moment of danger.

The Polish head of state explained to the kids that “when someone is being harmed, when there has been an accident or you see a fire - you should call the emergency number, 112,” the IAR news agency reported.

The president then encouraged children to draw on the expertise of emergency and rescue services, who were also represented at the event.

The children were taught how to give first aid, how to be safe in the mountains and in cyberspace, among other advice.

“We are giving you this advice so that everyone returns safely from the holidays,” Duda told the children.

'Cruel war caused by irresponsible adults': Polish first lady

The president wished everyone “a beautiful, wonderful Children’s Day and peaceful holidays, full of rest."

Meanwhile, the first lady addressed children from war-torn Ukraine, telling them that “nobody should be going through what you are right now.”

She said she hoped “the cruel war caused by irresponsible adults” would end soon and Ukrainian kids would be able to return to their homeland.

Agata Kornhauser-Duda also said that her wish for young Poles and Ukrainians was that “you are able to realise your dreams and can always count on us, adults.”

Wednesday was day 98 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Poland on Wednesday reported it had welcomed nearly 3.75 million refugees fleeing Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
