By the end of May, Poland had provided temporary protection to a total of 1,142,375 Ukrainians, more than any other EU country, according to the Eurostat agency.

Among EU member states for which data are available, Bulgaria came in second with 111,895, and Slovakia was third with 76,510.

In May alone, Poland granted temporary protection to 96,085 Ukrainians, according to the EU statistics office.

Temporary protection is a procedure used in the event of a mass influx of displaced persons from third countries who are unable to return to their country of origin, Eurostat said.
