Jewish treasure hidden from Nazis discovered during construction work

During the renovation of an old townhouse, builders in the central Polish city of Łódź dug up a wooden crate containing hundreds of Jewish valuables hidden from the Nazis.

The sensational discovery was made during the groundwork carried out as part of the renovation of the historical townhouse at Łódź's Północna street.

A crumbling wooden box with antique, Jewish valuables was found. The crate was possibly hidden there by a Jewish family from the German occupiers at the beginning of World War II.

Pre-war candlesticks, caskets, salvers, cutlery, glasses, napkins, rings, and various dishes were found in the crate. In total, some 400 glass, metal, and silver-plated objects of everyday and religious use were found.

"The discoveries have been inventoried and handed over to conservators for study. They will then be transferred to the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź. There, hopefully, a special, public exhibition will be prepared," the director of the Board of City Investments in Łódź Agnieszka Kowalewska-Wójcik told local newspaper Dziennik Łódzki.
