One in three of those in favour said Poland should only shelter refugees until they can safely return home, while 9 percent believe refugees should be allowed to take up permanent residence in the country.

At the same time, 77 percent of respondents welcomed efforts to strengthen Poland's border with eastern neighbour Belarus amid a migrant surge, the survey also showed, as cited by state news agency PAP.

Meanwhile, 14 percent of those polled opposed such measures and 9 percent were undecided.

The survey was carried out from September 6 to 16 on a representative random sample of 1,218 Polish adults.
